YAKIMA FRONTLOADER VS HIGHROAD

Yakima FrontLoader vs HighRoad Which Roof Bike Rack is right for you?

FrontLoader Vs HighRoad

Looking for a roof-mounted bike rack that secures your ride with no frame contact and doesn’t require any fussing about with wheel removal? Yakima’s FrontLoader and HighRoad are both top-notch choices, and each has its own strengths. Here’s the lowdown on rooftop bike racks, including why you’d choose one and how these two compare.

When a rooftop rack makes sense

Not sure if a rooftop bike rack’s what you need? Taking your bike up top is often the smarter choice if you:

  • Don't have a towball or hitch

  • Tow a trailer or caravan and need the tow ball free

  • Carry other racks or gear on the back of your car

  • Have a big crew to shuttle, and the hitch/tow spots are already spoken for

If you tick one of those boxes, you’re in the right place.

Wheel-on vs fork-mount: what’s the difference?

Before we dig into the details, it’s worth noting one big thing the FrontLoader and HighRoad have in common: they’re both wheel-on bike racks. The other main type of bike roof rack you’ll see is the fork-mount.

  • Fork-mount racks (like Yakima ForkChop or HighSpeed) require you to remove the front wheel before loading. They’re usually a bit cheaper and a solid choice if you don’t mind the “wheel off, wheel on” routine.

  • Wheel-on racks (like Yakima FrontLoader and HighRoad discussed here) let you load the bike with both wheels on. The price point may be a touch higher but the payoff is faster, easier loading.

What FrontLoader and HighRoad have in common

Whichever option you choose, both racks:

  • Hold bikes by the wheels: no direct frame contact (keeps carbon fibre frames and custom paint jobs looking schmick, and no “wheel on, wheel off” Mr Miyagi action is required)

  • Work with most crossbars: round, square, or factory (except square bars with depth exceeding 38 mm).

  • Can carry a wide variety of bikes: road, MTB, gravel, CX, and eBikes (within weight and size limits).

  • Allow side-by-side use:  while both have single bike capacity, you can carry multiple bikes up top by mounting racks side by side (depending on your roof and crossbar or platform system’s load rating).

  • Arrive ready to go: fully assembled and quick to install.

Yakima FrontLoader Vs HighRoad: comparison

If rooftop storage with wheel-on simplicity is what you’re after, Yakima’s  FrontLoader and latest generation HighRoad both keep your bike upright, your wheels on, and frame untouched. But how do they stack up against each other? Let’s take a look.

Which one should I choose?

FrontLoader– great if you want a simple, lighter solution (great for kid’s bikes) that does the job well. The recommended solution if mounting to a Yakima LockNLoad Platform.

HighRoad– higher weight capacity, greater wheelbase and wider tyre compatibility, easier torque control, and T-slot integration (which in turn creates more useable crossbar space for carrying more bikes or other gear) make it the go-to if you want extra features and versatility. Also particularly beneficial on bars with very low roof clearance as it picks up the T slot on the top of the bar.
