Lifestyle
Living on the Southern Gold Coast means we're rarely indoors. If I’m not in the ocean, I’m probably on a trail somewhere. Trail running has become a huge part of my life not because I'm chasing podiums, but because of the community it's introduced me to. We have a Run Club called the Grave Diggers just a bunch of good mates digging deep and having a crack most weekends. What’s with the name you ask, yeah great question…. The idea behind it is that we must die to ourselves each day, included in that is we’ve got to bury the old man, in other words keep being better and doing life better.
Meet ’n Greet
I'm a father to two teenage girls, and they're my favourite adventure buddies. I married a Canadian having met her in California back in 07 we got married in 08. I spent the first decade of married life surviving long winters in her home town and making the most of short summers, which taught me the value of finding good people to explore life with. Creativity has always been part of who I am from photography and product design to becoming a commercial cinematographer. These days I'm happiest with a camera in hand, a trail under my feet, or loading up the Pajero for the next mission.
Most memorable place you've travelled / adventured?
Living in Wānaka, New Zealand, during my early twenties. I spent four years climbing every summer through the Matukituki Valley. Looking back, I don't think I realized just how special that place was until I left it, still feels like one of the most beautiful corners of the world.
Best outdoor or travel tip (Pro Tip)?
Don't save your gear for the "big trip." Use it every weekend. Take the fam or the wifey to some scenic look out, grab the chairs open the awning, brew up a cup of tea…. Simple, but memorable. The best adventures usually happen within a couple of hours of home, and the memories are made because you said yes, not because you travelled the furthest.
Fast Talkin’
If you could give a TED talk, what would it be about?
The Importance of Community. Adventure is rarely about the destination it's about the people beside you. Whether it's trail running, camping or filmmaking, I've found that the best experiences happen when you intentionally build community include new people and just do life together.
If you could live a completely different life for a year, what would you do?
I would want to go on tour for a year, maybe the States and Europe playing in a punkrock band. Let’s say we were really good back in the 90’s and this is our comeback tour after 30 years and so less pressure but still heaps of fun!
How do you like giving back? What's the cause you're passionate about or favourite not-for-profit/organisation?
There’s a pretty unique NFP called ‘Beautiful Crazy’ they provide essential care bags for supporting families in ICU, these bags just ease the burden for families in life’s hardest moments. Last year the founder did a major fundraising event where he cycled from Perth to Bryon Bay raising awareness. The event was called the Longest Ride. Beautifulcrazy.org
Tell us something now many people would know about you?
I didn't get into filmmaking until my late 30s. Before that I worked in photography, design and product development. Reinventing my career taught me it's never too late to chase something that genuinely excites you.
How do Yakima products help make your adventures easier?
Yakima has genuinely changed how often we get outside. Instead of spending half the trip packing, unpacking and trying to make everything fit, the gear lets me stay organised and get on the road faster. Whether it's carrying bikes, building a comfortable campsite with the 270 Awning, or testing the new MOD system for both camping and film gear, it means I spend less time thinking about logistics and more time doing what I actually love.
